We don’t provide refunds for MetroCards while the transit system continues to operate. However, you still have options for using your card later.
Processing time for MetroCard claims
We have resumed processing MetroCard claims, following a pause in processing because of the pandemic. These claims include refunds, balance protection claims, and applications for Reduced-Fare and EasyPayXpress MetroCards.
If you filed a claim while our operations were paused, know that we are addressing claims as quickly as we can. If you want to file a claim now, the best way to do that is online.
We’re processing claims starting with the oldest first. We’re currently working through claims filed in February for full-fare MetroCards and the beginning of March for Reduced-Fare MetroCards.
What to do if...
...you have an Unlimited-Ride MetroCard
If you haven’t started using your Unlimited-Ride MetroCard, you can hang on to it and start using it anytime until the expiration date on the back of the card.
Unfortunately we cannot pause it once you’ve started using it.
...you use pre-tax commuter benefits
Other than damaged MetroCards and cards covered under the Balance Protection Program, we are unable to resolve any issues you may have with the pre-tax MetroCards you received through programs like WageWorks.
To stop receiving a pre-tax MetroCard, you must contact the benefit provider directly to pause or cancel your enrollment.
...you have a Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard
That value will remain on you card until the expiration date on the back of the card. If your card expires, you can transfer the balance to a new card.
You have up to a year after the expiration date on the card to transfer the balance at a booth, a MetroCard Vending Machine or by mailing it in to MetroCard Customer Claims.
We issue a replacement card for the remaining value on your Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard. We don’t provide cash refunds.
About in-person transactions
In order to limit person-to-person contact for our station agents and riders, we’re not making cash transactions at station booths. You can make MetroCard transactions at MetroCard Vending Machines.
