L Weekend March 20 - 23, 2020

March 20-23

10:45 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday

No L service between 8 Av in Manhattan and Broadway Junction in Brooklyn

What’s the work? We're putting the final touches on a few different pieces of the L Project between Manhattan and Brooklyn. This work requires full access to the track or the station platform. It includes:

  • Connect negative and positive feeder cables from the new Avenue B substation to the circuit breaker house to both Q1 and Q2 tracks
  • Connect power cables from the new Maspeth Avenue and Harrison Place substations in Brooklyn to the tracks, following the prior successful energization of low tension electric service
  • Restore the contact rail section gap at Bedford Av on both Q1 and Q2 tracks
  • Install negative equalizers between Q1 and Q2 tracks
  • Cutover the radio antenna cables to the new system on both Q1 and Q2 tracks
  • Complete the new emergency alarm and telephone system cutover from the old system for both Q1 and Q2 tracks
  • Complete final inspections for Bushwick Av-Aberdeen St, Halsey St, Morgan Av and DeKalb Av Stations for accessibility and station platform renewal project

What's happening to service?

L trains will not operate between 8 Av and Broadway Junction all weekend. L train service will run between Broadway Junction and Canarsie Rockaway-Pkwy every 10 minutes.

What should customers do?

L train: Every 10 minutes between Broadway Junction and Canarsie Rockaway-Pkwy; every 20 minutes during the late nights

M train: Will run every 8 minutes up to 96 St-2 Av, until after 1:30 a.m. when it runs every 20 minutes between Metropolitan Av to Myrtle Av

G train: Will run every 8 minutes during the peak daytimes

Three free shuttle buses: Shuttle bus #1: fare-free as a loop between Lorimer St (L) and Marcy Av (J/M), making stops at Lorimer St (L), Bedford Av (L), Hewes St (J/M), and Marcy Av (J/M); shuttle bus #2 runs between Lorimer St and Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs in both directions and stops at Marcy Av (J/M); shuttle bus #3 operates between Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs and Broadway Junction. Note: bus operation may be adjusted based on street conditions.

L Overnight Feb 18 - 19, 2020

Tues., February 18 to Wed., February 19

~11:45 p.m. on Tuesday to 5 a.m. on Wednesday (last train times depend on station location)

L trains will bypass Union Sq-14 St Station

What’s the work? We're making progress on the new escalator on the L platform at Union Square. We need to do architectural finish work—wall tiles, painting and lighting—plus a special cleaning required before the final installation steps happen. The cleaning is from top to bottom of the escalator, so the platform will be too wet and therefore unsafe for customers.

What's happening to service?

L trains will continue running every 20 minutes, but will skip Union Sq-14 St Station.

What should customers do? If you're traveling between Manhattan and Brooklyn, start your trip at another L station, or consider taking the alternate special M service (until 1:30 a.m.) or additional G service.

If you're traveling within Manhattan, use the M14 SBS.

L Weekends Jan 17 - 19; Feb 14 - 18, 2020

~11:15 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday (last train times depend on station location)

No L service between Lorimer St and Broadway Junction

What’s the work? We're putting the final touches on a few different pieces of the L Project at select stations in Brooklyn, all of which require full access to the track or the station platform. This includes the station rehabilitation and accessibility improvement work at Bushwick Av-Aberdeen St, Halsey St, Morgan Av and DeKalb Av, as well as work we're able to progress at Bedford Av because of the extra working space available.

What's happening to service?

From 10 PM to Midnight Friday:
L: Operates every 20 minutes between 8 Av and Rockaway Parkway
L: Additional L train operates between Lorimer St and Rockaway Parkway for service every 10 minutes within Brooklyn

From ~ 11:15 PM Friday (last train times depend on station location) to 5:00 AM Monday, Jan 20/5:00 AM Tuesday, Feb 18:
L part 1: Operates between 8 Av and Lorimer St every 20 minutes
L part 2: During the day time, the L operates between Broadway Junction (trains will discharge on the J platform) and Rockaway Parkway every 10 minutes. During the overnight times, the L operates every 20 minutes like a normal schedule.

What should customers do? If you're traveling between Manhattan and Brooklyn, consider taking the A or J, as well as the special M service (until 1:30 a.m.). The free shuttle bus will come every 3 minutes to connect between Lorimer St and Broadway Junction, so consider this option, too.

L Weekends Nov 8 - 11; 15 -18; 22 - 25, 2019

November 8-11
November 15-18
November 22-25

~9:30 p.m Friday to 5 a.m. Monday

No L train service at 8 Av or 14 St-6 Av Stations

What’s the work?

We're creating three new accessible platforms at 14 St-6 Av Station: Under the L Project, the L platform and the F/M platform will be made accessible at this station, a critical connection hub in Manhattan. Additionally, with the next capital plan, the 1/2/3 platforms will also be made accessible. This will be managed as one project to increase efficiency, and will be done in phases with the L platform accessibility scheduled for completion first. Details include:

L platform accessibility: This project will provide two elevators from the street to the mezzanine, and another two from the mezzanine to the L train platform. Work will start on or before December 31, 2020, and will complete on or before December 31, 2022.

F, M platform accessibility: As part of the design and construction of the L platform accessibility, we are also designing and planning certain preliminary preparatory work for additional accessibility upgrades to the F and M train platform, including two elevators. With the additional elevators, we'll use the two street elevators that will be installed to support the L platform accessibility to also connect the F, M trains mezzanines (both uptown and downtown) from street level and the passageway leading to 14 St-6 Av Station on 7th Avenue. Construction of this project is to be included as part of the 2020-2024 Capital Program Plan proposal, which will seek the right approvals and funding to start construction in that five-year time period.

We're working on this 14 St-6 Av Station accessibility initiative and continuing station work in Brooklyn.

What's happening to service?

  • L service will ramp down to every 20 minutes between Union Square and Lorimer St, and then every 10 minutes between Lorimer St and Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway.
  • No L service at 8 Av or 14 St-6 Av Stations

What should customers do?

  • If you're traveling in Manhattan: Use the M14-SBS to get across town
  • If you're traveling between Manhattan and Brooklyn: Use the alternative service options for the L Project, like the G, J and special M service (until 1:30 a.m.)

L Weeknight Oct 31 - Nov 1, 2019

Thurs., October 31 to Fri., Nov 1

L trains will run on a normal schedule

What’s the work? None! We're not working so you can easily get around this busy night, especially given the annual Village Halloween Parade location.

What's happening to service?

L trains will run their normal weeknight schedule, pre-L tunnel rehabilitation.

What should customers do? Use the L!

L Train Weeknight Oct 21 - 22, 2019

Mon., October 21 to Tues., October 22
Thurs., October 24 to Fri., October 25 (CANCELLED)

Midnight to 5 a.m.

No L trains at Union Square for one night each date

What’s the work? Augmenting accessibility and reducing crowding at Union Square Station with new escalator: The L platform at Union Square is among the most congested platforms in the system: 18,700 people use it in the AM peak hour and 16,500 in the PM. Following the successful redesign and construction of the two L platform to NQRW platform stairs under the L Project, the planned escalator will further alleviate congestion while also aiding customers with mobility challenges.

We're moving the new escalator pieces in place. We need full access to the L platform at Union Square to do this safely for you.

What's happening to service?

8:30 p.m.-midnight: L service ramps down to running every 20-minutes from 8 Av to Lorimer St, and every 10 minutes between Lorimer St and Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway

Midnight to 5 a.m.: L trains will bypass Union Square Station in both directions. Additional details:

  • L train service in Brooklyn will run every 20 minutes. We have to suspend the extra train service there to get the job done.
  • FYI, ~12:49 AM: One Manhattan-bound L train will make its last stop at Lorimer St. This is so we can get the right work train in while we move more escalator materials in place.
  • FYI, ~2:49 AM: One Manhattan-bound L train will make its last stop at Lorimer St. This is so we can get the work train out to restore service.

What should customers do? Continue using the alternative service options, especially the M14 SBS if you're headed crosstown in Manhattan. If you need to transfer to another train at Union Square, get off at either 14 St-6 Av or 3 Av and walk or take the M14 SBS to Union Square. See a station agent or other MTA team member to get a courtesy pass to transfer.

L Weeknight Oct 15 - 16, 2019

Tues., October 15 to Wed., October 16

Midnight to 5 a.m.

No L trains at Union Square for one night

What’s the work? Augmenting accessibility and reducing crowding at Union Square Station with new escalator: The L platform at Union Square is among the most congested platforms in the system: 18,700 people use it in the AM peak hour and 16,500 in the PM. Following the successful redesign and construction of the two L platform to NQRW platform stairs under the L Project, the planned escalator will further alleviate congestion while also aiding customers with mobility challenges.

We're delivering as many as three sections of the new escalator. We need full access to the L platform at Union Square to do this safely for you.

What's happening to service?

Between 10 p.m. and midnight, L service will run slightly more frequently than the usual every 20 minutes. That's because we're doing our monthly track inspections this evening, too.

Between midnight and 5 a.m., L trains will run every 20 minutes, but will bypass Union Square Station in both directions.

L Weekend Sept 13 - 16, 2019

~10:45 on Friday (depending on your station's last train time) to 5 a.m. on Monday

No L service between 8 Av and Broadway Junction

Map for alternative service options

What’s the work? As we progress the tunnel rehabilitation ahead of schedule, the MTA is also progressing the accessibility and infrastructure projects promised under the original scope of the L Project. During this weekend, we will advance two primary projects:

2. Creating three new accessible platforms at 14 St-6 Av Station: Under the L Project, the L platform and the F/M platform will be made accessible at this station, a critical connection hub in Manhattan.

What's happening to service?

L trains will continue to run every 10 minutes between Broadway Junction and Canarsie Rockaway-Pkwy and every 20 minutes during the late nights as normal. There will be no L service at other stations.

What should customers do?

If you're traveling between Manhattan and Brooklyn, your alternate service options include:

  • L train: Every 10 minutes between Broadway Junction and Canarsie Rockaway-Pkwy; every 20 minutes during the late nights
  • M train: Will run every 8 minutes up to 96 St-2 Av, until late nights when it runs every 20 minutes between Metropolitan Av to Myrtle Av
  • G train: Will run every 8 minutes (instead of the normal every 10 minutes) during the day
  • Two free shuttle buses: Shuttle bus #1: fare-free as a loop between Lorimer Street (L) and Marcy Avenue (J/M), making stops at Lorimer St (L), Bedford Av (L), Hewes Street (J/M), and Marcy Avenue (J/M); shuttle bus #2 runs between Lorimer Street and Broadway Junction in both directions and stops at Marcy Av (J/M)

If you're traveling in Manhattan, consider using the additional M14 Select Bus Service (SBS).

M Weekends August 17 - 18; August 24 - 25, 2019

Sat., August 17 to Sun., August 18
Sat., August 24 to Sun., August 25

M trains will run up to 145th St Station (instead of 96 St-2 Av Station) for two weekends

What’s the work? We're doing major work on switches to improve reliability on the 1, 2, 3 lines. This change is to provide alternative service to those customers.

What's happening to service?

M will be rerouted to 145 St via Central Park West local track on Saturday and Sunday, supplementing the C on the west side of Manhattan

What should customers do? Keep using the M as an alternative during the L Project tunnel work, but know that it's going a different route for these two weekends.

L Weeknights April 15 - 26, 2019

April 15 - April 26

10:30 PM to 5 AM, Mon to Fri

No L overnight between Lorimer St and 8 Av

What’s the work? As part of the revised L project, we’re still moving forward with the long-term reliability improvement work we had originally planned. This includes installing signal equipment. For you this means that we’ll have the right signals ready to run the one-track operation in April. We’ll also take this time to prepare the tunnel for the rehabilitation work, delivering materials, pulling fiber optic cable and installing tunnel lights so we can work efficiently during the one track operation.

What should customers do? If you’re traveling between Brooklyn and Manhattan, you can take the A , F, or J. For Manhattan L stations, you can take the M14 bus. In Brooklyn, the L will still operate between Lorimer St and Canarsie-Rockaway Pkway. Free shuttle buses will loop between Lorimer St G/L, Bedford Av, Marcy Av J, and Hewes St J.

Here are the key transfer points to remember during this service change:

  • Broadway Junction for the A, J or L
  • Lorimer St/Metropolitan Av for the L, G or shuttle bus
  • Marcy Av for the J or shuttle bus
  • 14 St-8 Av for the A, E or the M14
  • 14 St -6 Av for the F or M14
  • Delancey-Essex Sts for the F, J or M14A

The G operates in two sections:

  1. Between Court Square and Bedford/Nostrand Avs
  2. Between Bedford/Nostrand Avs and Hoyt/Schermerhorn, every 20 minutes.

For connection to the G, consider using the 7 or E. For service between Williamsburg and Greenpoint use the J.

L Weekend March 22 - 23, 2019

March 22 - March 23

11:45 PM Fri to 7 AM Sat

L trains skip 14 St- Union Sq in both directions

What’s the work? As part of the L Project, we’re continuing with station improvement work and this includes rebuilding two stairs between the L and NQRW platform at 14 St-Union Sq. We’ll be opening these new, wider, and reconfigured stairs early-- on March 23. While we finish the final work on the stairs and remove the platform barricades, L trains will need to bypass the station so we can do the work quickly and safely.

What should customers do? Between 11:45 PM Friday and 7 AM Monday, you’ll be able to connect between the L and the 4/5/6 or N/Q/R using a free transfer available at the 3 Av station. Our team will be on hand to make sure you get where you need to go.
