Aira: Making the Subway More Accessible for Blind and Low-Vision Riders

Updated Feb 28, 2020

Aira is an app that connects blind and low-vision subway riders to highly trained professionals who provide visual information on demand. We used Aira during our Accessible Station Lab pilot.

When you call Aira using the app, a professional agent sees your surroundings through your smartphone camera. Aira can be used anywhere that extra information can save you time and enhance efficiency.

Try Aira

  • Download the app: it’s free to download and available in the Apple App and Google Play stores
  • Create an account: open the app, enter your mobile number to create an account, and select the “Get Started” button
  • Connect with a specially trained Aira agent: learn how everything works and receive real-time information from your agent as you navigate the subway.

You can use Aira anywhere in NYC for short tasks for free, or for longer by subscribing to the service.

Aira is working on multiple solutions to help people who are blind or low vision better navigate public spaces. To learn more, visit https://aira.io/
