If you're traveling to see the annual Macy's 4th of July fireworks on the Hudson River, public transit is the way to go. We also have some service changes for the holiday.
Holiday service changes
Subways and buses
- On Thursday, July 4, subways and buses will run on a Saturday schedule, including extended Rockaway Park Shuttle service to Rockaway Blvd .
- In the evening, , , and 42 St Shuttle service will run more frequently to accommodate higher ridership to the Macy's fireworks display, and extra trains will run after the conclusion of the fireworks.
- On Friday, July 5, subways and buses will run on a regular weekday schedule.
Long Island Rail Road
- On Tuesday, July 2, the 5:13 p.m. train from Penn Station to Speonk will be extended to Montauk.
- On Wednesday, July 3, the LIRR will run on a summer Friday schedule, with an extra evening train from Jamaica to Montauk.
- On Thursday, July 4, the LIRR will run on a weekend schedule. Sunday westbound trains on the Montauk Branch will run, and off-peak tickets will be valid on all trains.
- On Friday, July 5, the LIRR will run on a summer Friday schedule with regular fares in effect.
- On Sunday, July 7, the LIRR will run an extra evening train from Montauk to Jamaica.
Metro-North Railroad
- On Wednesday, July 3, Metro-North will run on a Friday schedule with extra early-afternoon outbound service on most lines.
- On Thursday, July 4, Metro-North will run on a Sunday schedule, with an extra evening New Haven Line train. Off-peak tickets will be valid on all trains.
- On Friday, July 5, Metro-North will run on a Friday schedule with regular fares in effect.

When and where to see the fireworks
Macy's Annual 4th of July Fireworks happen Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at 9:25 p.m and last for about 30 minutes.
This year, the fireworks display will take place on five barges along the Hudson River between approximately W 14 St and W 34 St. There will be viewing areas along the West Side of Manhattan. There are also viewing areas in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Public viewing areas
The public can view the fireworks along the West Side Highway in Manhattan by entering at one of the following entry points:
- Christopher St and Washington St (ADA accessible)
- W 11 St and Washington St
- W 12 St and Washington St
- W 29 St and 11 Av
- W 40 St and 11 Av (ADA accessible)

These subway stations are nearest the entrances to the official viewing areas:

- 14 St/8 Av
- 34 St-Hudson Yards
- 42 St-Port Authority Bus Terminal
- Christopher St-Stonewall
- Times Sq-42 St
- W 4 St-Washington Sq
Buses that will serve the viewing areas include the M8, M11, M12, M14A-SBS, M20, M23-SBS, M34-SBS, and M42.
