Leadership from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) were joined by Mr. and Mrs. Met to remind New York Mets fans that no matter where you’re coming from, public transit is the fastest way to Citi Field. With the Mets back for the 2023-24 season, the MTA is the best way for fans to get to the stands for the home opener against the Miami Marlins. With the opening of the Long Island Rail Road terminal at Grand Central, Mets fans anywhere in the MTA region have easy transit access to Citi Field for the first time ever.
“It’s great to celebrate the return of baseball to Queens, especially with the first LIRR ride from Grand Central Madison to Citi Field,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. “Taking transit is the best way to get to the game, and our ridership reflects that. The Mets are a shot in the arm for the Long Island Rail Road and for New York.”
“Between subway, bus and Access-A-Ride, New Yorkers have no reason not to catch a game at Citi Field this season,” said New York City Transit President Richard Davey. “Mass transit is the best way to the game in a fast, safe and environmentally friendly way.”
“We are on a fan focused mission to get Mets using mass transit,” said New York Mets Chief Communications Officer Nancy Elder. “It’s so convenient, it’s the way to get to the ballpark. I want to thank all of our loyal Mets fans, alum and Mr. and Mrs. Met for being here to celebrate our home opener.”
“I am so thrilled to be here celebrating this new terminal and the possibilities it will provide not only all New York City residents, but especially Queens residents. It’s truly a home run for the people of Queens,” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards. “This couldn’t come at a better time as we all get ready to enjoy days at the ballpark cheering on our New York Mets.”
“Today we are celebrating something surely excellent, and that is a brand-new way to get to Citi Field, hoping that Mets fans and game goers from the Bronx, from Manhattan, from other places will use mass transit instead of driving,” said Senator Jessica Ramos. “We are working to make sure there is reliable service for all New Yorkers.”
“I want to thank the MTA and the Mets for making sure there is more access for riders to get to the games. Anytime we have more routes and more service for New Yorkers to get to Citi Field is a good thing,” said Assembly Member Steven Raga. “There is now one less excuse for our friends in the Bronx to not come experience the championship caliber train in Queens.”
Ahead of the home opener, a group of 25 lucky Mets ticket holders rode the first LIRR train from Grand Central Madison to Mets-Willets Point with Mr. and Mrs. Met and Mets alum Turk Wendell. The fans were also given t-shirts and stickers to commemorate the ride. The MTA will provide the following service options to get to all New York Mets home games.
Metro-North Railroad
The opening of Grand Central Madison makes it easier than ever for Mets fans in Metro-North territory to get to the game.
Customers can take a one-seat ride into Grand Central and finish their trip either on the LIRR or the train. Either option can get a customer to the stadium in 30 minutes from Grand Central.
Long Island Rail Road
The LIRR provides direct service to the Mets-Willets Point station all season long via the Port Washington Branch, just a 19-minute ride from Penn Station. Fans traveling from Long Island on other branches can reach Citi Field by changing at Woodside, just a five-minute ride from the stadium.
New York City Subway and Buses
The Mets-Willets Point subway station is right in front of Citi Field on Roosevelt Av near 126 St. Fans can always take either the local or the express 7 train to reach Mets-Willets Point.
The Q48 bus stops at 126 St and Roosevelt Av, right in front of Citi Field. Customers can use the real-time bus ridership tracking feature on the MYmta app before boarding.
Access-A-Ride
Access-A-Ride paratransit has a designated stop at Citi Field located at 41 Seaver Way (126 St and 37 Av), south of the Bullpen Gate in the Passenger Loading Zone (second cut out) directly in front of the AMWAY awning. Customers have ample shelter and a clear sight line of 126 St from Bullpen Gate.
