One of Two Tubes Will Be Closed for Two Weekends in April

Other Tube to Remain Open During Closures with One Lane in Each Direction

Motorists Encouraged to Use Alternate Route if Possible

MTA Bridges and Tunnels today announced that for two weekends in April, one of the two tubes of the Queens Midtown Tunnel will be closed to accommodate milling and repaving of the roadway. The Manhattan-bound (north) tube will be closed from Friday, April 16, at 11 p.m. through Monday, April 19, at 5 a.m. The Queens-bound (south) tube will be closed the following weekend, from Friday, April 23, at 11 p.m. through Monday, April 26, at 5 a.m.

During each weekend tube closure, the other tube will remain open with one lane in each direction. There will also be partial weekend tube closures during overnight periods for additional related work the weekends of April 30-May 3 and May 7-10.

The repaving work means drivers will benefit from a smoother and improved driving surface and clear newly striped lane marking lines.

Signage will be in place to alert customers, and NYPD Traffic Enforcement Agents will be posted to manage traffic. Motorists should allow extra time and use an alternate route if possible.

The MTA encourages motorists to sign up at www.mymtaalerts.com for e-mail or text alerts about work at MTA Bridges and Tunnels.

Given the large number of vehicles that cross through the Queens Midtown Tunnel each day, the roadways in the tubes need to be repaved every few years to maintain a smooth driving surface. The tubes were last repaved as part of the three-year effort to rebuild the tunnel after Superstorm Sandy, which was completed in July 2018—nine months ahead of schedule.
