Crews Fortifying and Enhancing Coney Island Yard Complex to Protect It Against Future Severe Weather Events
MTA New York City Transit today reminded the public that service changes that will affect train travelers in southern Brooklyn will take effect Saturday as the agency continues to fortify and enhance the Coney Island Yard Complex. In the latest phase of the project, new flood walls, flood gates, drainage and pump stations will be installed to help protect the system against future severe weather events. Once completed, these fortifications will allow Coney Island Yard to withstand storm surges similar to those seen during Superstorm Sandy.
“Superstorm Sandy showed us that we need to ensure that all of our NYC Transit facilities need to be protected, resilient and fortified against future natural disasters,” said New York City Transit Interim President Craig Cipriano. “I know first-hand, having worked at the Coney Island Yard Complex in the early ’90s, that the yard is key to maintaining the structure and integrity of our subway system.”
“These enhancements to one of the largest transit yards in North America are an important step to ensure that New Yorkers have a safe, reliable transit system at all times,” said Demetrius Crichlow, Senior Vice President of Subways for MTA New York City Transit. “As we welcome New Yorkers back to work, they will see a modernized system that will be able to cope with any type of weather event.”
For 15 weeks, starting Saturday and continuing through Jan. 3, 2022, there will be no train service between Bay 50 St and Coney Island-Stillwell Av. Weekdays, trains will run to Bay 50 St every 10 minutes. Rush hours, additional trains will run from/to Bay Pkwy or 25 Av. Weekend trains will run to Bay 50 St every 12 minutes. Overnight, trains will run approximately every 20 minutes.

- For service to/from Coney Island-Stillwell Av, transfer between and at Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr, 36 St or 62 St-New Utrecht Av or transfer between and at W 4 St.
- Free Shuttle Bus between Bay 50 St and Coney Island-Stillwell Av .
Free MetroCard transfers available with the following bus routes connecting to nearby subway lines:
- B64 between near Bay 50 St station and Coney Island
- B1 between Bay Pkwy and 25 Av stations and 86 St on the and Avenue X on the
- B82 between Bay Parkway to Coney Island
ADA-accessible stations:
- 62 St-New Utrecht Av Bay Pkwy , and Coney Island .
Bay 50 St is not ADA accessible.
The Coney Island Yard complex is one of the largest rapid transit yards in North America, directly serving four main lines of track. It includes three train yards that can store up to 881 subway cars. The complex is also home to car wash, maintenance, and repair facilities, as well as substations, signal towers, and power and communications cables that support operations.
This fortification project is being managed by MTA Construction and Development and is part of the capital program.
