The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced transit crews completed extensive functional and aesthetic upgrades at Baychester Av  Station in the Baychester section of the Bronx. This work is part of New York City Transit (NYCT)’s Re-NEW-vation Program, which utilizes planned service outages to perform station-wide repairs, enhancements and deep cleaning providing customers with brighter and better station environments.

At Baychester Av Station NYCT workers repoured concrete along 30 yards of walkways outside entrances and exits to the station alleviating tripping hazards. Over 100 lighting fixtures were cleaned and replaced with LED lights providing a brighter environment throughout the station. Workers rehabilitated station stairways, completely rebuilding 70 problem steps in the process, and installing new safety treads where necessary. Customers can now enjoy refinished benches while waiting on platforms. Station interiors were scrapped and repainted throughout the station including platforms, mezzanines and stairways. Workers also installed a new extensive drainage system to aid in water mitigation.

“With the Re-NEW-vation program, Baychester Ave customers are directly experiencing the results of our North Star mission of delivering faster, cleaner, safer service,” said NYC Transit Richard Davey. “Brighter and cleaner stations show customers that the MTA cares about their journey from the moment they step foot into a station all the way to their destination.”

“The Baychester  train station is an important transportation destination for many here in the Northeast Bronx community,” said Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie. “As families, students and workers use the station day to day, updates like those provided by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) through its Re-NEW-vation initiative is paramount to a safer and cleaner commute to and from daily destinations. When we invest in our communities, we invest in the lives of those who choose to live and raise their families here. Thank you MTA for your renovation efforts and your commitment to Bronxites and all NYC transportation users. As we continue to expand our partnerships to update and create safe, reliable, accessible, and aesthetically pleasing public transportation for our city, we will witness the magnitude each step toward these goals make on the lives of everyday New Yorkers.”

“As Council Member and resident born and raised in the 12th District, I am thrilled for the announcement of renovations to the Baychester  Station through MTA’s Station Re-NEW-vation Program. This major initiative strengthens our commitment to revitalizing NYC stations—addressing key concerns for a faster, cleaner, and safer transit experience for our commuters,” said Council Member Kevin C. Riley. “I commend the Metropolitan Transportation Authority expanding efforts of the New York City Transit’s Faster, Cleaner and Safer plan here in the Northeast Bronx. Through my shared commute with neighbors on our subway system, I recognize the importance of enhancing stations through cleaning and renovation efforts. The Re-NEW-vation of the Baychester Ave  Station is a step in the right direction, paving the way for a more vibrant and inclusive transit experience for all communities. I look forward to continued partnership that expands these comprehensive programs as a standard for all stations citywide.”

In October, NYCT announced it had delivered on its promised goal to complete re-NEW-vations at 50 subway stations by the end of the year.
